On slowing time - Seville
A couple of days into my trip in Seville, I noticed something peculiar; it felt like I had been there much longer than two days. While getting things done and thinking maybe 20 minutes had passed, I’ll check the time and realise only 5 minutes had passed.
Time had slowed down for me. Being in a new environment and taking my time doing things, not rushing to be one place or the other, and certainly not having my usual routine slowed time down for me.
I’ve read or heard somewhere years ago that the reason life seems long when we’re children is because everything we’re experiencing is new. As adults, life seems short or to be moving fast because we rarely experience new things and are stuck in our everyday routines. This makes perfect sense for what I was experiencing.
We sometimes lose sight of the fact that we need to break our routines or switch things up a bit to get more out of life. Of course there are many reasons why this might sometimes not be feasible but in the cases that it is, we need to give in to slowing time.
We can’t always do this as life becomes one long arduous process of constantly looking for the new thing to slow down with; finding the right balance is key. Maybe picking up a new hobby, going somewhere new or even listening to new music. Whatever we can do to occasionally slow time will give us a better perspective and approach to life.
